Save The Date: Special Town Board Meeting Sept. 29

As mentioned in a statement read by Lansing Town Supervisor Ruth Groff at the Town Board Meeting September 16, Lansing will have a Special Town Board meeting at the Lansing Middle School September 29 at 6:30pm. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss Governor Hochul's Executive Order 62 (the data center moratorium EO), how it affects the Town of Lansing, and options for the Town.

The Town Supervisor said EO 62 creates "uncertainty and confusion for local governments..." and that the town may "expend significant resources to complete work that may be displaced by the state's review [as directed in EO 62]." She shared that nearly 40 municipalities in New York have imposed moratoria or bans on data centers, and that Lansing "must consider what action, if any, is in the best interest of the town moving forward."

Lansing is now seeking public input to help inform this decision!

There will be one hour of public comment on September 29. The first 30 minutes of comments are reserved for Lansing residents. After that, others will be invited to give comments. Individual comments are limited to 2 minutes.

Generally, a municipal moratorium would table any data center proposals for a set time frame. After which the moratorium either expires and proposal review resumes or the moratorium is extended. A municipal ban, like we saw in Dryden this year, would make it so that data centers, that meet certain criteria like noise or electricity demand, are not allowable.
